This list will be useful to anyone who wants to learn more about and practice Open Science, but also to those more experienced in data and repository management.

We focus on the resources that we used for REPOPSI development and maintenance as well as on the resources we leveraged during the REPOPSI improvement project funded by EOSC Future and RDA.

We also introduce Open Science resources that have proven useful to psychology researchers and students at the LIRA Lab or that were developed by them.

Repositories of research instruments

Open, free-of-charge repositories where you can find and store psychological tests and other research instruments used in social and behavioral science research:

REPOPSI – by LIRA Lab

Focuses on instruments in Serbian, but also documents English and multilingual instruments

Specifically for instruments in the Slovak language

More repositories…

More repositories – either general (for all kinds of research data) or disciplinary and specialist repositories – where you can find and store research instruments, but also articles, preprints, datasets, code, supplements, preregistrations,…

Learn about FAIR and TRUST

If you are interested in Open Science, we recommend you learn more about the FAIR and TRUST principles.

If you decide to open your data or tools, making them publicly available is not enough. It would be good if you also made sure that both humans and machines are able to easily Find, Access, Interoperate, and Re-use your data and metadata (FAIR).

Repositories that follow the principles of Transparency, Responsibility, User focus, Sustainability, and Technology (TRUST) can support you in doing just that.

More on FAIR-ness:

REPOPSI is an open repository where you can find (and store your own) psychological instruments, such as tests, scales, and questionnaires. The LIRA Lab launched the Repository in March 2020. At that time, REPOPSI had 129 records – as of July 2023, there are 200. But the increase in the number of instruments is not our only achievement. Our efforts to promote REPOPSI to a wider audience led to more crowdsourced contributions. We have also improved the Repository’s adherence to the principles of Open Science, making it possible for REPOPSI to serve as a role model for the development of other smaller-scale open repositories of research data. The most significant moment for REPOPSI was when we were awarded a €50,000 grant from the EOSC Future and Research Data Alliance (RDA). Those were the first funds we had received for the REPOPSI development.

The project consists of three work packages (WPs), which you can read more about below.

WP1: Improving the TRUST-worthiness and FAIR-ness of the Repository

The first WP aimed to improve the TRUST-worthiness and FAIR-ness of REPOPSI, including its data (i.e. psychological instruments) and metadata (i.e. data describing the data in the Repository). The TRUST-worthiness of a Repository is reflected in its adherence to the principles of Transparency, Responsibility, User focus, Sustainability, and Technology. The FAIR-ness of (meta)data is reflected in their adherence to the principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse. To get a better idea on where to concentrate our efforts and to evaluate the progress we made, we conducted a self-assessment test at the start and at the end of the project, relying on the FAIR Data Maturity Model and the CoreTrustSeal Requirements 2023-2025. The graphs below show how REPOPSI’s FAIR-ness improved, compared to the start of the project. As part of WP1, we:

WP2: Disseminating the activities of the project

The second WP was focused on communicating the results of the project, advertising REPOPSI to a wider user base, and promoting further uptake of RDA outputs. As part of WP2, we:

The third WP was designed with the goal to increase the number of REPOPSI records. First, we recruited and trained three psychology master’s students from the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Philosophy to assist us with WP3 activities: Aleksandar S. Milovanović, Milica Damnjanović, and Milica Mitić. Next, student assistants searched the E-theses repository and documented the relevant doctoral theses and psychological instruments available in them. After the senior project members determined which instruments satisfied the copyright and quality requirements to be opened in REPOPSI, student assistants started filling in the online REPOPSI contribution forms and contacting corresponding authors where more information was needed. This way, we recorded 120 new original instruments and instrument translations; most of them can be made fully open in REPOPSI, while the rest will be available upon request or at an external website. A total of 15 records were added to REPOPSI in July 2023. We plan to add more records by the end of the year, so make sure to check back for updates!

The post How did we get to REPOPSI 2.0?

1. Where to get information about REPOPSI?

On the website.

REPOPSI was launched in 2020; in 2023 it underwent improvements as part of a project supported by EOSC Future and Research Data Alliance and, as a result, there are now new and easier ways you can use it.

Therefore, whether you are new to REPOPSI or not, your first stop should always be the new website: www.repopsi.f.bg.ac.rs/en/

Watch these short video clips in which REPOPSI team members present:

REPOPSI basics: click to start the video (7 min; in Serbian)

Basics of the REPOPSI improvement project: click to start the video (5 min; in Serbian)

The new REPOPSI website: click to start the video (4 min; in Serbian)

2. How to find instruments in REPOPSI?

Using the web application, online spreadsheet or inventory files.

You can search REPOPSI in three ways, which are described on the How to search REPOPSI page.

We recommend that you use the interactive web application, which allows intuitive, fast, and easy browsing of the Repository.

The two most important things to keep in mind when using the REPOPSI search application are:

Enter keywords in English, not in Serbian

Close the app window when you are done

Check out this video clip with a short demonstration of how to use the app:

click to start the video (8 min; in Serbian)

Most instruments are available in full in REPOPSI. For them, the column Where to find the instrument? in the app will read Repository , with a link in the following format: https://osf.io/xxxxx. Click the link to download all of the files associated with an instrument.

Watch this video clip with a short demonstration of how to download the files:

click to start the video (2 min; in Serbian)

3. Under what conditions can you use the instruments?

You may freely download and use the instruments for non-commercial purposes, provided you cite the author of the instrument and its translation.

REPOPSI can be freely accessed and used by everyone. You can download all of the instruments in the Repository without asking for permission. The instruments are opened under the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA) license. This means that, unless otherwise specified, you may use the instruments for non-commercial clinical, educational, and research purposes, with proper citation of the author of the instrument and its translation.

Below is an example of citing an instrument.

The most important thing to remember is that when you use an instrument translation, you should cite both the authors of the original instrument (i.e. the instrument in the language in which it was first published) and the authors of its translation.

Watch this short video clip in which we go through some common mistakes when citing instruments:

click to start the video (4 min; in Serbian)

4. How to store your instruments in REPOPSI?

Fill in the online REPOPSI contribution form.

Anyone who wants to can make their psychological instruments and instrument translations openly available in REPOPSI.

REPOPSI is primarily intended for instruments that have been translated into Serbian or adapted for the Serbian population, but also for all instruments developed by scientists from Serbia and the region (in any language).

If you would like your instrument or instrument translation to be openly available in REPOPSI, please fill in this online form.

At the beginning of the form you can read more about:

Which instruments are suitable for REPOPSI

What the form looks like and what you can prepare in advance

What to do if the instrument cannot be made fully open in REPOPSI, but you want REPOPSI users to know about it

Watch this video clip demonstrating how to fill out the contribution form:

click to start the video (20 min; in Serbian)

You’ve made it through the guide. Now you know how to use REPOPSI!

Parts of this guide were originally prepared for an online workshop organized in cooperation with the Open Science Community Serbia (OSCS) on June 21, 2023.

You can watch the recording of the entire workshop (in Serbian) here.
